My Story
Last Ditch Mining is my small mining and exploration company, based in Wells. I was born in Smithers, in Northern British Columbia and have always been interested in the history of mining in British Columbia. During my final year in high school, I found some silver ore locally and learnt to process it, finally producing small silver coins. I then spent 2 years studying Geology at Vancouver Island University and a 3rd year taking a heavy equipment course, learning to operate excavators.
I originally came to Wells in 2014, working at Barkerville for the summer. I felt at home in Wells and continued to spend the summers exploring and learning about mining. In 2017 I moved there permanently. I have continued to explore and learn about placer mining. I have made friends with many of the old time miners in the Cariboo and have documented many of their exploits and have learnt about the history of Wells and mining.
The Cariboo has a fascinating history and mining history is continuing to evolve. Every year modern day miners continue to arrive in Wells looking to make their fortune. Using the old maps and lots of local knowledge, today’s miners look for areas missed by the old-timers. I currently own 2 claims in the Wells area and help others test and work their claims. During the winters, I explore the area using google maps to find areas to explore in the summer. I also spend time in my workshop, building and perfecting rocker boxes.
Larger companies are also taking advantage of the high gold prices and are developing the hard rock mining opportunities in the area. The largest BGM is currently exploring and testing many claims around Wells and has plans for a concentration plant , hopefully bringing jobs and families to the town. Allowing it grow into a more vibrant and diverse community. ( continued below)
I hope you enjoy the photographs of my explorations. Yes I do use the maps for sale on this site! The old-timers knowledge is what I use to guide me now. If you have any questions about the area, please feel free to email me. I may even tell you about some secret locations!!!
